The most frightening thing about panic attacks is that, like earthquakes, they happen without warning. They build in intensity for a few minutes, and then subside as quickly as they came. But they leave their sufferers living in dread of the next one and trying to manage their lives around it.

Many people who have had a panic attack never experience a "next one". But if you are someone whose life has been disrupted because you have frequent panic attacks and are afraid that one of them will eventually endanger you or someone else, you may be ready to explore your options for panic attack treatment.

Panic attack disorder is the result of your body’s responding to non-threatening situations with its “flight-or-fight” survival reaction. Your body will, for a period of ten minutes or so, have intensifying symptoms like increasing heart beat and blood pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, an overwhelming sense of fear, or a feeling that you are losing touch with reality. Beginning with your facial muscles, tense each group of muscles and release it after a few seconds, then work your way down to the next group, until you finish with your toes.

Breathe deeply, and let your thoughts wander where they will, but don’t latch on to any of them during this panic attack treatment. When you’ve reached your toes, just let yourself imagine that you are in a favorite safe and beautiful place, and remain as you are for a few minutes before gradually resurfacing.
