Anxiety attacks are caused when there is a major imbalance of emotions or when one doesn't know how to react or deal with a certain situation. Some examples of events that could cause anxiety attacks to occur is a death in the family, use of certain drugs, pregnancies, divorce, childbirth, trouble with money, major traffic accidents, loosing your job, or any other event that can trigger strong emotions from you.

Most people still can experience anxiety attacks because of much smaller events and they can be just as bad as someone who had experienced a traumatic event. The causes for these might be much harder to pinpoint, but the good part about this is, you do not need to know the exact causes of your anxiety attacks to treat them or to get help with them.
