Anxiety Relief:  It's Worth The Effort To Get Anxiety Relief

Is there hope for anxiety disorder sufferers? What steps can you take to provide the anxiety relief that will get your life back on track?

The truth is that there are a variety of anxiety relief options from which to choose, and that not all of them will be equally effective for every individual. The length of treatment you require will depend on the severity of your anxiety disorder, and whether or not it has been accompanied by depression or phobias.

But some people have experienced anxiety relief within a matter of months, while others have not fully recovered for over a year. So to hone in on treatment which will maximize your anxiety relief in the shortest time, you need to consult with a doctor experienced in treating anxiety disorders.

Unless you anxiety symptoms are such that you need to be admitted to a hospital--and this is very rare--your doctor will probably recommend one, or a combination, of the most widely accepted anxiety relief therapies.

The four established anxiety relief therapies are behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, medication, and relaxation training. Researched and developed, for the most part, by the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, they are most often done in combination.

Of the four anxiety relief treatments, the cognitive and behavioral therapy options are considered the most effective. Anxiety disorder sufferers undergoing cognitive therapy are asked to examine their thought patterns by visualizing themselves in threatening situations, imagining the most catastrophic outcomes, and then picturing ways they could react if those situations actually occurred. They eventually realize that even the most uncomfortable external events very rarely have life-threatening consequences, and that there are various coping strategies to deal with them.

Behavioral therapy takes the cognitive therapy a step further, and provides anxiety relief by requiring anxiety victims to actually expose themselves, for gradually extended periods, to places and events which frighten them. As they are able to face frightening situations for longer amounts of time, they become desensitized to the anxiety triggers, and their anxiety attacks eventually stop.

Many doctors prescribe anxiety relief medications, including benzodiazepines and anti-depressants, for their patients who are receiving cognitive and behavioral therapies. These medications will alleviate their anxiety symptoms while they are learning the skills which will free them permanently from their disorders.

Muscular and breathing relaxation techniques, and meditation, are other highly recommended anxiety relief tools. They help the anxiety victim first to recover from the effects of being in a constant state of alert, and then to experience the ongoing health benefits of a lifetime with lowered heart rate and blood pressure.

Anxiety relief therapies are effective in over ninety percent of those who stay with them long enough. Even though they do take some time to achieve results, don't be disheartened. How long is too long to wait to have your life back?
